History of Lingerie

From a cheek-revealing g-string, to a bustier, to a romantic gown and peignoir, there is a style of lingerie to suit any woman’s – or man’s – taste. From tiny sizes all the way to plus sizes, sexy lingerie is available to any woman who wants to feel the luxuriousness of fancy undergarments next to her skin or wants to surprise her gentleman companion for a special occasion or no occasion at all.

The word lingerie is of French origin, and in France the term applies equally to any type of underwear for either men or women; in the United States, however, the term lingerie has come to mean sexy or erotic underwear for women only. There are multitudes of sexy undergarments available, and even though lingerie is intended as underwear, it is even becoming more common to see it peeking through outerwear to add an even sexier touch to daily living. Common lingerie items include babydolls, teddies, corsets, garter belts and stockings, negligees, matching bra and panty sets, chemises, and even boy-cut panties.

Lingerie has been around since primitive times, and has varied in type, style, and purpose throughout its development. With the recent popularity of thong underwear, some may think that thongs are a new invention, but in fact, thong underwear was worn by tribal men and women in Africa centuries ago. The design of the thong, with a narrow band at the top and a small piece of fabric in front, with a thin band disappearing between the wearer’s buttocks was actually created for the male, but nowadays, especially in western culture, thongs are worn almost exclusively by women. Earlier in the nineteenth century and all the way up to the 1970s, thongs were not common for the average woman, and their sexiness was enjoyed mainly by exotic dancers or strippers, and most men saw them only in places such as those. Beginning in the 1980s, however, wearing things became more accepted, and now they are the hottest selling type of panty on the market.

Most lingerie today is worn simply for the sex appeal, but in years gone by, lingerie often had a purpose. Corsets, for example, were designed to change the shape of a woman and make her more curvaceous to suit the fashion of the day. In later years, the earlier half of the 1900s, girdles, too, were intended to give women a more flattering figure under their clothes. Girdles are designed to hold it all in and provide the smooth line a woman may not naturally have.

Brides have traditionally stocked their honeymoon trousseau with some kind of sexy lingerie to add spice to the wedding night, and that is still commonplace. That being true, it is also true that wearing sexy lingerie has become quite commonplace, and a search through the top drawer or closet of almost any woman will reveal some type of lingerie, whether it be a dainty and delicate babydolls made of white lace for the demure look, a spicy red garter and stockings for the more adventurous look, or a black bustier to be worn with black spike heels for a truly hot erotic touch.
